Do you know the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is twice the size of Texas? It is filled with plastic bottles, plastic bags and other human waste.

Nowadays we have been pampered by one-time-use packaging. While we enjoy all of the convenience, we also add the burden to Mother Earth. As all these packagings eventually go to trash, go to landfill, and go to ocean.

I still remember when I was a little girl, my mom usually asked me to buy salt. Then I would take the porcelain jar in the kitchen and walk to a grocery store nearby to fetch salt. There was no one-time-use bags or bottles. And we kept using that porcelain jar for years. This model certainly would not scale in modern world of e-commerce and globalization. However, it's still feasible and effective in a small scale when we buy local.

From late last year, we started to promote Bringing Your Own Jar to pick up coffee beans. It resonated pretty well. Our survey showed that 60% of the local customers, who participated in the survey, expressed interest. As time passed, more people started taking action. As matter of fact, earlier today, a customer came to pick up a bag of Ethiopia and told me that next week he would bring a jar for Yemen

We also got questions about what jars would be suitable. There are varieties available. Air-tight is the key.

My personal preference is the IKEA KORKEN glass mason jar: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/cat/jars-tins-15950/. They are inexpensive but of great quality. They look good. They use thick hard wires securing airtightness, so I feel safe for the beans.

These jars come with different sizes: the 17OZ jar is good for storing 4~8OZ of coffee beans; 34OZ jar good for 12OZ beans; 1.9 qt jar good for 16OZ (or 1 lb.) ; and 2.1 qt jar good for 24 OZ (or 1.5 lb). You can choose the right size based on how much beans you buy each time.

To label the coffee, we designed multi-use paper tags with tassels. They are descriptive, elegant and eco-friendly. More conveniently, you can easily detach the tags to keep them dry, while you wash the jars.
