Happy New Year!
As 2020 begins, we are proud to introduce three new fruity and floral roasts. Together with two classical roasts we put on shelf right before Christmas, we have total five new roasts. Now I'd like to share a little story behind each new coffee roast.
New Roast #1: Ethiopia Guji - Blueberry and Wine
Lots of fruit and wine flavors, even smells floral. These are what you would expect in a fine, natural-processed Ethiopian coffee.
Taste like rosé, a light Spanish wine, with intense fruit notes of blueberry and grape, very juicy.
Did I forgot to mention, this coffee was grown in Guji zone, a renowned coffee growing region in Ethiopia, also one of the preferred regions of Voca Coffee.
This is a light roast. We brewed a few pour over and shared them among some of Voca friends during the holidays. Even though majority of them were previously pure classical coffee drinkers, who would not drink anything less than medium to dark roast, they were all impressed by the pleasant and intense fruity flavors.
So, definitely recommended to light roast Ethiopia coffee lovers. And for those who would like to try Ethiopia or light roast, this coffee would be a good starting point.

New Roast #2: Ethiopia Kochore - Meyer Lemon and Jasmine
Yes, this is the coffee that we have been talking about for a while. It has the unique Meyer lemon flavor. We were so impressed with its bright, clean and crisp mouthfeel, also the perfumery aroma, so sweet and so floral.
Meyer lemon is a darling of farmers markets and beloved by chefs and home cooks. Meyer lemon is a small and sweet hybrid, thought to be a cross between a regular lemon and a mandarin orange. They're much less tart than regular lemons, and smaller, with thinner skin that's almost sweet.
This coffee originates from Kochore, which is right next to the famous Yirga Cheffe. No wonder it possesses so much floral characteristics, like jasmine, rose and even lavender.
But it is difficult to roast! It took several weeks of trial and error for us to eventually nail down the right roasting profile, which not only preserves the precious floral aroma, but also bring out the unique Meyer lemon flavor.
Besides, we've also done extensive brew experiments to find that this coffee requires slightly longer brew time for V60 pour over, 2:50 to 3:00, to achieve sufficient extraction. You will enjoy the brew process, because it's so fragrant.
A great coffee deserves the effort! Recommended to experienced coffee lovers!

New Roast #3: Kenya AA - Cara Cara And Mango
For fruity Kenyan coffee lovers, our new Kenya is on. Super bright and fruity, and sweet like hard candy.
The varieties of the coffee are the traditional SL-28, SL-34 and the new Ruiru 11. This is the firs time we offer Ruiru 11 in our Kenya coffee.
Ruiru 11 is a relatively new coffee variety in Kenya. It's a hybrid between Arabica coffee and Robusta coffee. The purpose of the hybrid is to improve tolerance to coffee leaf rust disease hence increase the yield. In recent years, as Ruiru 11 gaining popularity among Kenyan farmers, we have seen more and more Ruiru 11, mostly mixed with the famous SL-28 and SL-34 varieties.
At Voca Coffee, we are seeking the best coffee experience. Therefore, we have been very cautious when selecting Kenyan coffee that has any Ruiru 11 in it. In order to continue offering the best Kenyan coffee, we have sampled quite a few new Kenya and eventually we picked this one.
So now, we are happy to offer this Kenya with great cup quality: clean, intense and juicy!

New Roast #4: Java - Classical Dark Chocolate
This Java is a non-ordinary Java, but a pure-blood Arabica Typica variety and the green beans went through fully washed process. Therefore, it got the pure bittersweet dark chocolate flavor and the clean mouthfeel. Low acidity, earthy and complex!
Around 400 years ago, coffee was only planted in a few countries like Ethiopia and Yemen. In early 1700, Dutch East Indian Company managed to smuggle a few Typica seedlings from Yemen. Since them, coffee plant had spread cross the globe, to South Asia, Central and South America and even back to Africa countries. Hence, Typica is pretty much the great great grand of most coffee in the world.
This Java coffee went through fully-washed process, which is rare for Indonesian coffee. Therefore, it tastes much cleaner.
As the fully-washed and pure-blood Typica, it is a true classical coffee for classical coffee lovers!

New Roast #5: Organic Sulawesi - Sweet Chocolaty
Five months to select a new coffee - isn't that excessive? It did take us 5 months to finally offer this Sulawesi coffee. We want to select the right Sulawesi coffee, not just any Sulawesi.
We sampled a few in June and we didn't like those. When the new shipment came in September and October, we again sampled a few and were not impressed either. We were almost at the point to give up Sulawesi this year. Our importer suggested this new shipment in November and it just bingo-ed. It's interesting: they appeared from the same Sulawesi farm for sample we tried in previous month, but from a different lot. But the new beans tasted much cleaner and more complex.
Even better: this new Sulawesi is organic certified. More naturally healthy!
So, BINGO - our New Crop Organic Sulawesi!
